But what is the mechanism of the antimicrobial action of copper? It was discovered that the contact of the bacterium with the surface leads to the rupture of its membrane, però with a mechanism still unknown. This results in the loss of cellular materials, and the penetration of large amounts of copper ions into the bacterial cell. Here the copper ions react with oxygen, giving rise to the so-called "reactive species of oxygen" (ROS).
These substances are also known as free radicals, which react easily with cellular components, damaging them. The end result is that the bacterium's DNA is degraded to small fragments coming out of the cell. Not everything in this sequence of events has yet been clarified, but it is clear that, in one way or another, copper ends up suppressing the bacterium.
In addition, copper has a unique quality: apparently, to date, it is impossible to create resistant bacteria. The explanation for this is that the genetic material of the bacterium is completely degraded in contact killing, and thus prevents the transfer of a possible resistance gene to other organisms.
In addition, the killing is very rapid, and the bacteria do not multiply on copper surfaces, which makes it impossible to develop resistance. To confirm the above, it can be observed that copper, and its alloys, have been used by mankind for millennia without the development of resistant species.
Zinc, on the other hand, is known for its antiseptic activity. Various studies have been carried out on cultures of microorganisms, such as E. Coli, S. Aureus or C. Albican. As a result, zinc is able to inhibit bacterial proliferation and also has a fungistatic function. It should be noted that zinc has a well-known healing action; it is present in many creams for the prevention of diaper irritation for babies and also in creams against cracking of the hands by aggressive products, such as cement.
Acetic acid (or acetate in biochemistry, also known as ethanoic acid) is an organic chemical compound whose chemical formula is CH3COOH, better known for giving vinegar its characteristic sour taste and pungent smell. Pure acetic acid, anhydrous (i.e. without water), called glacial acetic acid, is a colourless liquid at room temperature.
